Welcome to the LAE Labs
LAE is pronounced /lɑɪ/ (rhymes with “hi”). Lae is the Hawaiian word for “forehead” or “wisdom”.
The Language Analysis and Experimentation (LAE) Labs are a research and teaching facility dedicated to human language and the cognitive mechanisms responsible for it. The labs are a facility for the College of Art, Languages, and Letters at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, supporting research on the articulation, acoustics, and perception of speech, the production and recognition of words, and the processing of sentences and discourse.
The LAE Labs are maintained by volunteers in the Department of Linguistics and the Department of Second Language Studies.
The LAE Labs are a coalition of physical spaces and virtual labs. We offer research tools (including audio and video recording hardware, computers and analysis software, and experimental equipment) and virtual resources (including research tutorials and language corpora).
All students, faculty, and visiting researchers in CALL are welcome to use the LAE Labs as a resource for their language-related needs.
